1 Executive summary (excerpt)

The battery is the energy product whose price has fallen fastest in history: a lithium-ion pack cost more than $1,100/kWh in 2010 and $115 on average in 2024 — minus ninety percent, with the largest annual drop since 2017. With that, the battery has turned from a component into infrastructure. It decides whether a compact electric car is competitive without subsidies (in China since 2024, in Europe probably 2027/28), whether solar power still has a value in the evening and whether grids stay stable without new gas plants. In 2024 more than 160 GWh of stationary storage were added worldwide — a doubling versus the previous year.

The technology story since 2020 is one of chemistry shift: lithium iron phosphate (LFP), dismissed in 2019 as a niche chemistry for buses, today accounts for around 40 % of the world’s vehicle cells and practically all stationary storage — cheaper, safer, free of cobalt and nickel, and by now fast-charging. Behind it, sodium-ion is advancing into the stationary market, while the solid-state cell — “five years from series production” for a decade — appears in small series for the first time in 2027/28. The industry story is one of concentration: two Chinese manufacturers supply more than half of all vehicle cells, Europe’s flagship Northvolt failed in 2024/25, and cell manufacturing in Europe increasingly takes place in plants with Asian owners.
